Le printemps est là. Presque là.
Pour ce qui concerne les helpers, ils sont tout-à-fait là et c’est toujours aussi magique !
Pourtant, la fin de l’année a été mitigée : nous avons reçu une personne à l’esprit fermé, raciste et xénophobe. Ensuite, deux personnes que nous attendions se sont désistées, il était trop tard pour les remplacer.
Spring is here. Almost here.
About helpers, they are really here and it is still so magical!
Yet the end of the year was not excellent: we hosted a mind closed, racist and xenophobic person. Later, we expected two helpers but they couldn’t come. It was too late to find other persons.

Mais les premiers helpers de 2015 ont effacé les doutes et les mauvais souvenirs !
Miikkael et Siobhan se sont rencontrés à Lyon et ont pris le même train. Le premier contact avec eux et facile et plaisant comme c’est souvent le cas. Nous essayons de parler français pour répondre à leur demande, mais Siobhan a plus de difficulté. Parfois l’anglais devient nécessaire.
Au Charbinat, Siobhan s’émerveille de tout et développe un joli talent de jardinière.

Miikkael va broyer beaucoup beaucoup beaucoup de bois car c’est la saison qui veut ça.
But the early 2015 helpers have erased the doubts and bad memories!
Miikkael and Siobhan met in Lyon and took the same train. The first contact with them is easy and pleasant as it is often. We try to speak French because they prefer, but it’s more difficult for Siobhan. Sometimes English spoken becomes necessary.
In Charbinat, Siobhan is amazed and becomes a good gardener. Miikkael will crush many many many wood because it is the season that needs it.

Pendant leur séjour, c’est moi qui taille les rosiers, Paul est partout, il plante, repique, arrose, coupe, il n’arrête pas ! Et il explique patiemment comment faire telle nouvelle tâche.
C’est le démarrage du jardin, il faut donc nettoyer, désherber, déroncer, et commencer les plantations.
Mais le week-end, Siobhan retrouve son chéri à Lyon.
Miikkael m’accompagne à la cueillette de l’ail des ours : il pense reconnaître une plante de Finlande. Il est le plus septentrional de tous nos helpers, il a autant l’habitude d’aller en Laponie que Paul d’aller au marché de Morestel.
During their stay, I prune roses, Paul is everywhere, he plants, transplants, plants out, waters, cuts, he never stops! And he patiently explains how to do this or that.
It is the start of the garden, so you have to clean, weed, remove brambles (or wildberries?) and start planting.
But on weekend, Siobhan comes to see her boyfriend in Lyon.
Miikkael accompanies me to the picking of bear garlic: he thinks he recognizes a plant he saw in Finland. He’s the northernmost of all our helpers, he is accustomed to go to Lapland as Paul is accustomed to go to the market at Morestel.

Avec la rencontre de plus de quarante helpers en trois ans, nous connaissons bien ce système d’échanges.
Nous avons hébergé toutes sortes de personnes, qui, tout en étant différentes les unes des autres, ont en commun d’avoir choisi de s’inscrire sur helpX.
Il y a donc des points communs entre tous. Les discussions sont nombreuses, variées et enrichissantes.
Les expériences de nos helpers sont elles aussi variées. Parfois nous sommes tous vraiment en colère !
Alors nous précisons notre point de vue : héberger des helpers, c’est recevoir dans notre intimité des gens que nous respectons et à qui nous devons donner autant qu’ils nous donnent.

With the meeting over forty helpers in three years, we know well this system of exchanges.
We have hosted all kinds of people who, while being different from each other, share for choosing to register on HelpX.
Thus, there are common points among all. The discussions are numerous, varied and they bring a lot to everyone.
The experiences of our helpers are also varied. Sometimes we all feel true anger!
So we specify our point of view: hosting helpers is to receive in our privacy people we respect and to whom we must give as they give us.

“Travailler plus pour ne rien gagner” titre triomphalement une chronique parue sur “Le Huffingtonpost.” Je dénonce moi aussi les hôtes malhonnêtes, les profiteurs, ceux qui font travailler du personnel non salarié la semaine entière, sans se préoccuper de l’aspect humain. Ce procédé reste rare, mais il suffit à corrompre la réputation de helpX.
Le Huffingtonpost a choisi un effet facile et l’article laisse entendre qu’il s’agit d’une pratique courante, alors je déplore cette méthode  qui a le mérite de dénoncer, mais qui donne trop d’importance à des agissements minoritaires.
“Work more to win nothing” a triumphant (written in French) chronic on “Le Huffingtonpost” entitles. I also denounce dishonest hosts, the profiteers, those who ask to work non-paid staff the whole week, regardless of being human. This process is rare, but enough to spoil the reputation of HelpX.
The Huffingtonpost choses an easy effect and the article suggests that it is a common practice, so I deplore this method: in spite denouncing, it gives too much importance to minority acts.

Je ne pense pas que HelpX soit une solution d’avenir même si certains sont helpers pendant des années. Pour ma part je dois toujours retourner un jour là où j’ai mes racines, et j’ai du mal à comprendre ceux qui choisissent de prendre définitivement la route.
Cependant, HelpX peut représenter une transition, aussi bien pour quelqu’un qui se cherche, que pour quelqu’un qui prend des vacances et retrouvera ensuite sa routine.
Et cette transition, dans une maison confortable où l’on est reçu comme faisant partie de la famille, peut être d’une très grande richesse.
I don’t think HelpX being a solution in the long term, even if some are helpers during years. I myself have always to return where I have my roots, and I understand with difficulty those who decide to be travelers for ever.
However, HelpX may be a transition, both for anyone who searches himself, or for someone who takes a holiday and then return to his routine.
And this transition can be very fruitful, being in a comfortable house where someone is received as a part of the family.

Quand Miikkael et Siobhan sont repartis, nous n’avions pas l’impression d’avoir été des exploiteurs sans scrupules. Ils ont l’intention de revenir, d’ailleurs nous avons gardé en otage les bottes de Miikkael.
D’autres sont partis, après avoir été helpers quelques semaines, puis voisins pendant plus d’un an ! Pour fêter leur nouvelle vie qui commence en Anjou, David et Maria nous ont concocté une excellente paella. Le déménagement étant prêt, nous avons fourni le matériel de cuisine – sauf la poêle !

Ils ont été d’excellents voisins, ils nous manquent. Nous espérons qu’ils trouveront le travail qu’ils désirent et que notre région ne leur a pas offert.
When Miikkael and Siobhan left away, we did not felt of having been unscrupulous exploiters. They plan to return, moreover we kept Miikkael’s boots as hostages.
Others left after being helpers few weeks and then neighbors for over a year! To celebrate their new life that begins in Anjou, David and Maria have concocted an excellent paella. The move was ready, we have provided cooking equipment – except the pan!
They were good neighbors, we miss them. We hope that they will find the job they want and that our region has not offered them.

David et Maria ont pris la route avec tout le chargement qu’ils pouvaient emporter. Miikkael avait d’ailleurs donné un solide coup de main pour descendre leur mobilier par la fenêtre. Le 3 avril, Siobhan a pris le bus pour Lyon, et Miikkael a profité d’une place dans la voiture d’Ariane et Renato pour se rendre en Italie.
David and Maria hit the road with all the load they could carry. Miikkael had also given a strong hand to get off their furniture out the window. On April 3th, Siobhan took the bus to Lyon and Miikkael took advantage of a space in the car of Ariane and Renato to go to Italy.
