Christopher et moi avons fixé des mois à l’avance la date du concert des Trois Becs. Et bien entendu nous n’avions pas remarqué qu’il s’agissait du samedi de Pâques.
Christopher and I have chosen months in advance the date of the concert of Les Trois Becs. And of course we had not noticed that it was the Easter Saturday.

J’ai eu bien des inquiétudes, à mesure que les invités donnaient une réponse négative. Alors qu’en s’entassant on peut être quarante dans la salle à manger, je comptais une bonne vingtaine de désistements parmi les habituées.
I had many worries, as the guests gave a negative answer. While in crowding we can be forty in the dining room, I counted two dozen withdrawals among the accustomed.

Je remercie David à qui j’ai exprimé mon découragement le jour où j’allais proposer aux Trois Becs d’annuler leur venue : David a fait basculer les statistiques – après quoi j’ai craint d’avoir à refuser du monde !
I thank David to whom I expressed my discouragement the day I was going to suggest to Les Trois Becs to cancel their attendance: David tipped statistics – after which I feared having to turn people away!

Il s’agissait du dixième spectacle, et du huitième concert, puisque nous avons organisé aussi une soirée théâtre et une soirée contes. J’ai la nette impression  qu’il va y avoir du changement à l’avenir : jusqu’à présent, je n’ai jamais eu à refuser du monde, mais maintenant qu’un solide noyau d’amateurs s’est constitué, et que mon fichier d’adresses s’étoffe…
It was the tenth show, and the eighth concert, since we have also organized a theater show and a storytelling one. I really feel that there will be change in the future: so far I’ve never had to turn people away, but now there is a significant group of regulars, and my mailing list is expanding …

Pour le concert des Trois Becs, nous nous sommes retrouvés finalement nombreux et vraiment très serrés… Quand tout le monde a été là, il n’y avait plus la place pour danser. Ni même pour se promener. À peine pour respirer.
For the concert of Les Trois Becs, we were finally a lot and really tight … When everyone was there, there was no more room for dancing. Or even for walking. Barely for breathing.

Cette soirée était plus particulièrement placée sous le signe de l’amitié, mais ne le sont-elles pas toutes ?
This evening was especially under the sign of friendship, but aren’t they all?

Pour revoir l’ami Christopher, Hélène et Alain ont fait une bien longue route, et sont arrivés chargés de bouteilles et de victuailles. Ils n’étaient pas les seuls ! Encore une fois, le buffet a été impressionnant.
To review the friend Christopher, Hélène and Alain had a very long road, and they arrived with a lot of bottles and victuals. They were not the only ones! Once again, the buffet was impressive.

Cela fait maintenant plus de deux ans que je prends des cours de chant, et cette fois Margot m’a encouragée à chanter en public. Après mon habituel petit discours, j’ai interprété “entre l’amour et l’amitié” de Henri Tachan, accompagnée au piano par Magali : je suis très heureuse d’avoir su mettre en pratique ce que j’ai appris grâce à Margot et Magali que je remercie encore. Cela a été un grand moment pour moi. Le public s’est montré encourageant.
It’s now over two years since I take singing lessons, and now Margot encouraged me to sing in public. After my usual little speech, I interpreted “entre l’amour et l’amitié” from Henri Tachan. Magali accompanied me on the piano. I am very happy to have been able to practice what I learned with Margot and Magali, and I thank both of them once more. This was a great moment for me. The public was encouraging.

Mais j’ai bien vite laissé la place aux Trois Becs : à Claire Guerrieri (pour le chant), Robert Bianchi (pour le chant et la guitare) et Christopher Murray (pour le chant, le piano, la guitare).
But I soon let room to Les Trois Becs: Claire Guerrieri (for singing), Robert Bianchi (for vocals and guitar) and Christopher Murray (for vocals, piano, guitar).

 

“La Centième Nuit” – ainsi que tout le récital des Trois Becs – ce sont des chansons d’Anne Sylvestre. La Centième Nuit est aussi le titre d’une de ces chansons, une histoire, presque une épopée, pleine de fantaisie. Chapeau en main, les comédiens-chanteurs, ou inversement, comme ils se définissent, donnent le ton.
“La Centième Nuit” – and all the recital of Les Trois Becs – these are songs of Anne Sylvestre. La Centième Nuit is also the title of one of these songs, a story, almost an epic, full of fantasy. Hat in hand, the actors-singers, or vice versa, as they define themselves, set the tone.

Les chansons se succèdent, parfois tragiques, parfois drôles, très variées, avec pourtant la griffe de leur auteure. Cependant, pour être honnête, je ne suis pas certaine de retrouver Anne Sylvestre à coup sûr si l’on me faisait écouter toute une série de chansons sans savoir qui les a écrites.
The songs follow each other, sometimes tragic, sometimes funny, very varied, yet with the specifc characteristics of their author. However, to be honest, I’m not sure to find Anne Sylvestre for sure if I were listening a variety of songs without knowing who wrote them.

J’ai été frappée par l’interprétation théâtrale que Claire a proposée, de “la femme du vent” par exemple. Longs silences et visage torturé, l’émotion est intense. “Rose” aussi est une tragédie, une de ces histoires de gens simples que la vie a dévorés.
Claire gave us an intense emotion interpreting “la femme du vent”, for example. Long silences and tortured face, the audience is captivated. “Rose” is also a tragedy, one of the stories of simple people that life has devoured.

Rose “couchait parfois, mais pour se réchauffer”. Ces quelques mots, choisis, pas au hasard, cette phrase si brève sur laquelle on peut longuement disserter, c’est tout Anne Sylvestre, sa formulation originale, son talent pour trouver le mot juste, pour planter une existence en quelques mots.
Rose “couchait parfois, mais pour se réchauffer” “Rose sometimes slept to warm up” *. These words, chosen not at random, this so brief sentence about which we can discuss at length, that’s all Anne Sylvestre, her original formulation, her talent for finding the right word, to evoke an existence in a few words.
*“coucher” (sleep) means implicitly “make love”

Anne a forcément connu, comme moi, l’ennui de cet enseignement de chansons débiles mais patrimoniales et patati et patata, et qu’on est obligés d’apprendre ! Elle a réécrit à sa façon “ah dis-moi donc bergère”, devenu sous sa plume “bergère”, que Christopher et Robert se sont réapproprié à leur tour.
Anne has necessarily known, like me, the boredom of this teaching of silly songs but heritage yada yada yada, and that we are obliged to learn! She has rewritten in her own way “ah dis-moi donc bergère” that became “bergère” (« shepherdess »), Christopher and Robert reappropriated it in their turn.

Je parlais d’interprétation théatrale : Robert et Christopher, derrière des masques grotesques, s’en donnent à cœur joie. J’espère que quand Anne elle-même a assisté à ce spectacle, elle a particulièrement apprécié le caractère caricatural bien appuyé de l’interprétation de sa “bergère” ! Ce fut un grand moment et je pense que dans le public chacun rit encore tout seul en repensant à cette interprétation burlesque.
I talked about theatrical interpretation: Robert and Christopher, behind grotesque masks, have a great time. I hope that when Anne herself attended this show, she particularly enjoyed the cartoonish character well supported interpretation of her “bergère”! It was a great moment and I think everyone in the audience laughed again thinking back to this burlesque interpretation.

Toutes les chansons étaient bel et bien écrites par la Grande Dame, même si la diversité de styles et de thèmes rend cela difficile à croire parfois. Tout en interprétant avec finesse et justesse l’œuvre d’Anne Sylvestre, nos trois lascars se sont bien amusés. Le concert comportait aussi quelques textes parlés – parmi lesquels une liste hallucinante de synonymes des mots “femme” et “homme”, essayez vous verrez, le sexe dit “faible” est encore une fois vraiment déconsidéré.
All the songs were indeed written by the Grande Dame, although the diversity of styles and themes makes this hard to believe sometimes. Our three fellows interpreted with fineness and precision Anne Sylvestre’s work, and they also had very good time. The concert also included some spoken texts – among them an amazing list of synonyms of the words “femme” and “homme”, try you will appreciate, the sex that is said low is really once more discredited.

Le récital des Trois Becs ne peut qu’effleurer l’œuvre d’Anne Sylvestre : son parcours est très long, son œuvre conséquente.
The recital of Les Trois Becs can  touch very few the work of Anne Sylvestre: her path is very long, her work considerable.

Qu’on la dise “chanteuse engagée” ou qu’on utilise un autre terme, Anne chante pour exprimer ses idées à sa façon personnelle, elle ne craint pas de déranger, ni d’entrer dans les détails d’une longue chanson pour traiter la totalité d’un sujet.
Je l’entends encore chanter à la jubilation de Rémo Gary “écrire pour ne pas mourir” : encore une fois, très peu de mots sont lourds de sens.
Let’s say “committed singer” or let’s use other terms, Anne sings to express her ideas in her own way, she is not afraid of disturbing, nor of giving the details of a long song to say the whole about the topic.
I still hear her singing during “la jubilation” of Rémo Gary “writing not to die”: again, very few words have heavy meaning.

J’ai eu l’occasion deux ou trois fois d’échanger quelques mots avec elle, mais pas au point d’être connue d’elle. Quand j’ai rédigé une lettre de motivation pour participer à un stage d’écriture de chants avec Anne, je n’avais pas de raison de faire allusion à nos brèves rencontres.
I had the opportunity a couple of times to exchange a few words with her, but not enough for her to know me. When I wrote a letter to participate to a song writing workshop with Anne, I had no reason to refer to our brief encounters.

Le lendemain du concert des Trois Becs, j’ai appris que ma candidature est retenue, j’en suis enchantée. Rencontrer Anne Sylvestre, non pas en tant que public s’adressant à une artiste, mais dans le cadre d’un projet commun me réjouit d’avance.
Après Rémo Gary et Thomas Pitiot, Anne sera mon nouveau professeur d’écriture, et j’attends cette date avec impatience.
The day after the concert of Les Trois Becs, I learned that my application is successful, I am delighted. Meet Anne Sylvestre, not as public speaking to an artist, but as part of a joint project pleases me beforehand.
After Rémo Gary and Thomas Pitiot, Anne will be my new writing teacher, and I look forward to this date.
