Jean-Pierre nous trouve un barnum ! Pas simple à monter sans notice, mais on y arrive et finalement, on est prêts à recevoir artistes et public – j’envoie une confirmation à toutes les personnes inscrites, le concert aura lieu, il faut prévoir des vêtements chauds !

Jean-Pierre finds us a big tent! Not easy to put on without a manual, but we get there and finally, we are ready to receive artists and the public – I send a confirmation to all those registered, the concert will take place, you have to bring warm clothes!
Hervé, Dramane (et Alain Liette) arrivent en début d’après-midi. Alain entre parenthèse, car il est invisible, transparent, son art consiste à se faire oublier – et il le pratique tout en finesse ! Mais il apparaît sur la photo ci-dessous !

Le temps pour tous les trois de se poser, manger un morceau, bavarder, repérer les lieux, et c’est parti pour une longue séance d’installation. J’ai toujours aimé être dans les coulisses, j’écoute les onomatopées virtuoses de Dramane.
Time for the three of them to sit down, have a bite to eat, chat, locate the places, and off we go for a long set-up session. I’ve always loved being behind the scenes, listening to Dramane’s virtuoso onomatopoeias.
Ghislaine et Marc viennent pour la première fois, et certainement pas la dernière ! Je les remercie pour les photos, les miennes ne sont pas prises sous le meilleur angle car j’étais de côté. La lumière n’était pas bonne à cause de la pluie et Ghislaine, Marc et moi avons rivalisé de photos floues.
Mais… comment voulez-vous éviter les photos floues quand Hervé bondit dans toutes les directions ?
Ghislaine and Marc are coming for the first time, and certainly not the last! I thank them for the photos, mine are not taken from the best angle because I was on the side. The light was not good due to the rain and Ghislaine, Marc and I competed in blurry photos.
But … how do you avoid blurry photos when Hervé is leaping in all directions?
Raconter quelque chose qui s’écoute, c’est impossible. C’est d’ailleurs ce que Jean-Pierre a fait il y a un mois, quand j’ai envoyé les invitations, et il a été conquis dès les premières notes ! Cela dit, même une bonne vidéo ne peut pas transcrire la chaleur humaine, les sourires, les rires, cette ambiance magique qui nous rend si heureux d’être là, ensemble, à écouter.

Pendant longtemps j’ai été hostile à la présence d’une sono car je croyais que c’était uniquement une facilité pour les artistes, maintenant j’ai changé d’avis : elle permet d’équilibrer les volumes sonores, les chanteurs ne sont plus obligés de s’égosiller au risque d’endommager leur voix. Bien sûr l’industrie du disque use et abuse des effets spéciaux, permettant de chanter à des personnes qui n’en sont pas capables, et ces nombreuses tricheries m’avaient caché l’intérêt d’une installation plus discrète.
For a long time I was hostile to the presence of a sound system because I believed that it was only a facility for the artists, now I have changed my mind: it allows to balance the sound volumes, the singers are not no longer forced to scream at the risk of damaging their voice. Of course, the recording industry uses and abuses special effects, allowing people who are not able to sing, and these many cheats had hidden for me the interest of a more discreet installation.

Or l’invisible Alain a fait un excellent travail, s’il y a de la technique on ne s’en aperçoit pas. Il n’a pas besoin d’en rajouter, Hervé et Dramane ont chacun une fort belle voix, deux voix que je pourrais confondre tellement les timbres en sont proches. Sans oublier la maîtrise parfaite des instruments. Ils chantent en français, mais pas seulement : des langues du Burkina ou d’ailleurs ? Des onomatopées aussi, certainement. Ils se répondent, les yeux dans les yeux, dans une complicité absolue !
But the invisible Alain has done an excellent job, if there is technique we do not notice. There is no need to add more, Hervé and Dramane each have a very beautiful voice, two voices that I could confuse the timbres are so close. Without forgetting the perfect mastery of the instruments. They sing in French, but not only: languages from Burkina Faso or elsewhere? Onomatopoeias too, certainly. They answer each other, eye to eye, in absolute complicity!
Et toujours les sanzas, ou pianos à pouce, Hervé en parle là, sur son site. Il a même trouvé un luthier pour transformer en sanza son précieux bidon bleu : le luthier a aplati la surface nécessaire pour poser quelques lames de scie à métaux. J’adore cet instrument aux multiples usages, Hervé aussi en fait grand cas.
And always the sanzas, or thumb pianos, Hervé talks about it there, on his site. He even found a luthier to transform his precious blue canister into a sanza: the luthier flattened the surface necessary to put down a few hacksaw blades. I love this versatile instrument, and Hervé really likes it too.
Et toujours les koras, pas tout à fait des harpes, dont il faut en permanence ré-accorder les nombreuses cordes.
And still the koras, not quite harps, of which you have to constantly re-tune the many strings.
Et toujours les flûtes dont joue Dramane de façons diverses et stupéfiantes, avec son souffle et avec sa voix. Le résultat est vraiment inattendu, c’est magnifique et magique.
And always the flutes that Dramane plays in various and amazing ways, with his breath and with his voice. The result is truly unexpected, it’s beautiful and magical.
On pense que le beau spectacle arrive à sa fin, pourtant Hervé appelle dans l’assistance son ami Jean-Philippe, pour une improvisation remarquable (Vous notez le bonnet sur la tête de Jean-Philippe, accessoire indispensable un 14 juillet !). Voilà de nouveau quelque chose d’extraordinaire. Une séance à trois comme s’ils n’avaient jamais fait autre chose. Dramane retrouve une de ses percussions, Hervé sa kora. Il y a du chant, de la musique, du texte parlé, chanté, des onomatopées, et je me rappelle Jean-Philippe remerciant tout le monde par des mots chantés : c’est marrant, c’est très émouvant. Ils s’écoutent, se renvoient la balle, comme si une pulsation connue d’eux seuls leur donnait le rythme.
We think that the beautiful show comes to an end, however Hervé calls in the audience his friend Jean-Philippe, for remarkable improvisation (You note the cap on Jean-Philippe’s head, indispensable accessory on July 14!). This is something extraordinary again. A three session as if they had never done anything else. Dramane takes one of his percussion, Hervé his Kora. There is singing, music, spoken text, sung, onomatopoes, and I remember Jean-Philippe thanking everyone with singing words: it’s funny, it’s very moving. They listen, send the ball, as if a pulsation known from them alone gave them the pace.
Au concours des sourires, il serait très difficile de les départager.
In the contest of smiles, it would be very difficult to decide between them.
L’ambiance ne retombe pas après un spectacle de cette qualité alors que nous partageons le buffet.
